Brainstorming
You can always start by checking for inspiration! Try @marrymusehttps://www.instagram.com/marrymuse/ on Instagram or our Pinteresthttps://www.pinterest.com/marrymusewedding/ page to get ideas for great wedding day hair. Look for photos of hair that is similar to your own in color and texture and for images with the hair accessories (veil, headbands, etc.) that you might want. The closer to finding what you will have exactly, the easier that your stylist will be able to get your look perfectly.
Before the trial run, discuss what you’re thinking for hairstyles, what your dress looks like, and what accessories you are planning on wearing in your hair with your stylist. Stylists will tell you how much time to plan for testing your different styles.
The Trial Run
Any good stylist will tell you that the key to making sure you don’t have any hair troubles on your big day is to do a trial run before your wedding. Most stylists even include this as part of their wedding package for you. They will specifically request brides-to-be come to the salon at least once before the wedding to test hairstyles.
Come to the salon dressed in a button-up shirt just like you will on wedding day. You don’t want to have to pull anything over your head once your hair is done. At this point, the fun begins. Stylists will get to work creating different looks for brides, letting the bride-to-be see what she thinks will look best for the big day. They’ll often try different ways of pinning hair up, different sprays, and ways of manipulating hair into bridal perfection. This is a great time to test a few styles to see what is best.
After the test appointment, wear your new ‘do home and make sure it’s comfortable. Weddings are long affairs. If you’re not comfortable after the trial, you might consider another option. Your discomfort may be worse when your the focal point of attention and all your friends and family are vying for your time. Remember, whatever is in your hair during the test appointment styling will also be there for the wedding. That might be fifty or even a hundred bobby pins.
Have the person who is going to help disassemble you hair after the wedding come over to help take the hairstyle down on the day of your trial appointment. This will give that person a chance to learn what works best for removing all bobby pins and accessories so that after the reception is over, they can quickly help you unpin your hair before rushing off to the honeymoon.
We suggest you do a trial early on so that you can plan for a second or third trial if you aren’t happy the first time around.
Six to Eight Weeks Out
When you’re a month or two out from your wedding day, definitely don’t go big on change! Now’s not the time to for a color you’ve never tried, a perm you’ve never had, or bangs you’ve never sported. Yes, hair grows back, but do you really want to take that risk this close to your special day? What you can do is update any existing coloring jobs (that you’ve had done before!) so you don’t have any roots showing. You can also get a trim to keep any split ends at bay.
The Day Before
Ask your stylist when the best time to wash your hair is based on the style you are getting. Your ‘do may hold better if it’s not washed ahead of time. Or the style could call for very clean hair. It depends, so don’t be afraid to ask! The squeaky wheel gets the grease!
